Dear everyone,
Welcome to Week 4 of ANZ 23 Mobile Things! We hope you enjoyed exploring email on the go in Week 3; here’s a short list of the major content from last week:
-
Introduction post to Email on the Go – by Linda Moore
-
Wrap-up post – Abigail Willemse
This week we are exploring “Maps and checking in” – I’m really excited about this topic as there is heaps of potential for libraries to use location-based services to engage their users.
What’s happening this week…
Begin with exploring the Introduction post for Maps and Checking In from Mylee Joseph (23 Mobile Things) – unfortunately our own introduction post for this week went missing, so this one is straight from the original 23 Mobile Things programme.
We are having another Twitter chat this week, but this is one with a difference! Read this provocative article: “Smartphones have bridged the digital divide” and we will discuss whether we agree with it in our chat on Wednesday night – 8:30PM (NZ) and 6:30PM (AEST). I’ll also come up with a list of starter questions based on this article to guide our conversation which will be published on the blog tomorrow.
What should I do this week?
-
Experiment with the default map app(s) on your device
-
Play with an app like Foursquare; try checking in with it and exploring it to see what it can do
-
Think about privacy and security implications, as well as the benefits of engagement
-
Also consider geocaching and how you could engage library users with push technology and added geographically based information
-
Read “Smartphones have bridged the digital divide” in preparation for our Twitter chat on Wednesday night!

Join in our Twitter chat on Wednesday night – 8:30PM (NZ) and 6:30PM (AEST).
Coming up…
Thing 5 next week combines a number of things we have learned so far such as taking photos on a mobile device and using a GPS app to check in. I’m really looking forward to “Photos + Maps + Apps: Historypin” which pulls together what we have learned so far.
As always, don’t forget to check us out online regularly so that you don’t miss out on all the interaction that is going on!
